The Eastern Bay Chamber of Commerce is warning regions to future-proof themselves so they don't go down the same path as Auckland.
As Auckland house prices and population continues to rise, many people are looking outside the city to relocate or simply to buy a home in a more competitive market.
Chief executive for the Eastern Bay Chamber of Commerce Ged Casey said the regions need to ensure they are in a position to accommodate the impending growth.
Mr Casey said growth is now the biggest challenge for local Government and economic development leaders.
"We're at a stage with ageing infrastructure in most regions, and we're now starting to get nationwide growth, so we have to start looking at how we're going to spend and invest that money and develop the infrastructure to attract people."
He said the pressure can't just be on local government to draw people in and reduce the strain on Auckland.
"Central government needs to step in and start supporting local government for them to be able to invest in infrastructure to build, to attract people into the regions."
