New Zealand children are learning about the experiences of Syrian refugee children this weekend, in a twist on World Vision's 40 Hour Famine.
More than 100,000 young people are taking part in this weekend's famine, to raise money for Syrian children affected by civil war.
But this year participants are also being urged step into the shoes of refugees, and swap everyday luxuries for the essential items they can fit into a single backpack.
World Vision chief executive Chris Clarke said many Syrian children he has met have fled safe, beautiful lives to live in camps.
Mr Clarke said funds raised through his year's famine will go towards creating child-friendly spaces in Jordan, which is home to more than 600,000 Syrian refugees.
