Parts of the South Island are in for more heavy rain this afternoon, and official warnings are in place.

MetService anticipates as much as 90mm more rain about the ranges of Westland south of Otira until mid-afternoon.

The ranges of northwest Nelson are already getting rain, and there's likely to be 100mm by this evening.

A burst of heavy rain is also expected about Mount Taranaki from this evening until tomorrow morning.
