Public get say on proposed indoor fireplace ban

Expect plenty of opportunities to have your say about a proposed ban on indoor fireplaces in urban areas.

A draft policy banning open fires and older burners in Auckland has been adjusted, so it won't take effect until October 2018.

Bylaws committee chairman Callum Penrose says it still needs to go to the council, and then out for public submission.

"The draft policy will go out for consultation on the 10th November and hearings will start about February next year."

Callum Penrose says all councils are required to meet the Government's new rules for air quality.

Auckland councillors say the Government's new air quality rules are the reason they're considering a ban on indoor fires.

Penrose says the council is trying to enforce the Government rules in a reasonable way.

"Whilst we might be the big bad ones that have to deliver it, we want to deliver it in a way that works for all Aucklanders."

Callum Penrose says more than a hundred New Zealanders die each year due to pollution caused by indoor fires.
