Some North Island regions are looking at a major upgrade to their electricity networks - but it will mean a rise in power prices.

Powerco has proposed a 1.4 billion dollar spend to upgrade the network that supplies the Coromandel Peninsula, parts of Waikato and Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu, Tararua and Wairarapa.

Chief executive Nigel Barbour said many of the poles and wires that make up the bulk of New Zealand's electricity network were built in the 50s and 60s.

"Over the next five years, our team will be replacing 1600 kilometres of overhead powerlines, 27,500 poles and cross-arms, as well as building new and upgraded sub stations."

The Commerce Commission will make a decision after reviewing the plan and public feedback later this year.
