The Mayor of Horowhenua has given a heartfelt speech to the crowd gathered at Waitarere Beach to remember Alex Fisher.

Mayor Brendan Duffy joined the community in a candlelight vigil to honour the 10 year-old whose body was found on the beach on Thursday.

Mayor Duffy's expressed his gratitude to the emergency services who helped in the search and rescue, and praised the community for its resilience.

"This time last week we were innocent Waitarere, now...now we are holding hands in support of a family and a community who've suffered an enormous tragedy."

Meanwhile Police are appealing to the public to continue helping with investigations into the death of 10-year-old Alex Fisher.

NZME reporter Jimmy Ellingham was at a media conference held by police at Waitarere Beach this afternoon.

"There wasn't a lot of new information today but one thing police did reveal was that there had been a burglary which he said was of interest and that burglary has happened in Waitarere Beach but he didn't really give many more details."

While police investigate what connection the burglary may have to Alex's death, they want residents at Waitarere Beach to check for any damage or disturbance to their properties.

Police wouldn't confirm the specific location of the burglary, nor any circumstances related to Alex's death.

Police also want information on sightings on Alex or his brother Eric, on Sunday or Monday.
