Red faces for Turangi police, and red eyes for the town's residents, after smoke from a cannabis burn-off wafted through town.

A video of Friday's hashed burn job has been posted on social media by Adam Green, who says smoke drifted right across the road to the New World carpark.

He said the town sure smelled like " the old ganja".

Locals have been quick to make light of the gaffe, remarking at least the supermarket was right there if anyone got the munchies.
