The Eagle helicopter will be in the air in Gisborne, alongside a heavy police presence on the roads, to combat reckless driving and anti-social behaviour during the New Year’s festival period.

Police said this move will send a firm message to holidaymakers who have flocked to celebrations, such as Rhythm and Vines.

“Reckless and anti-social behaviour on our roads will not be tolerated,” police said.

Eastern District Commander Superintendent Jeanette Park said police were aware of planned gatherings by groups linked to anti-social road behaviour in the Gisborne area.

Park said officers will be across Gisborne and the wider Eastern District to keep communities safe and hold dangerous drivers to account for the remainder of the busy holiday period.

“Anti-social road user behaviour is reckless and wreaks havoc on our communities. We won’t stand for it,” Park said.

To support the “heavily resourced” ground operations, the police Eagle helicopter will be deployed to Gisborne from today, she said.

“The Eagle helicopter gives us eyes over the district, helping us respond quickly and effectively to any dangerous activity.”

She said anyone who intends to cause disruption or operate a vehicle in a dangerous or unsafe manner can expect a stern response.

“If you plan to disrupt other road users or drive dangerously, expect consequences.

“We will be impounding vehicles, issuing infringement notices and bringing charges in appropriate circumstances.”

Police said they will be actively checking for driver impairment, speeding, licence breaches and any risky behaviour.

“Spectating unlawful street racing and sustained loss of traction encourages those involved in the offending.

“It is also incredibly dangerous,” Park said.

Police also urged the public to help keep the roads safe by reporting any unlawful or dangerous driving immediately.
