It would mean people illegally owning guns could hand them over at their local police station, no questions asked.
It comes after several people have been killed by police after aiming weapons at officers.
The Police Association says the high number of shootings is a result of more criminals are getting access to guns.
Police commissioner Mike Bush said allowing people to hand their guns to police could stop them before they get into the wrong hands.
He said he wouldn't want to follow Australia's approach of a firearm 'buy back' saying the country found it too expensive.
