There is anger over a proposed ban on new mines, but locals say they will keep it contained during a visit by the Prime Minister to the West Coast today.

Minerals West Coast says it won't protest their arrival, but is stressing any funding announcement won't mitigate the impact of the ban on new mining.

Director Peter Haddock says mining is the backbone of the region and supports all local businesses .

"Without the local support during the year when the tourists aren't there, it would affect the whole economy if it were to stop."
