Pioneering judge Mick Brown has died.
The first-ever Principal Youth Court Judge in New Zealand was known for revolutionising the youth justice system, introducing family group conferences and championing restorative justice.
Judge Brown's changes are credited with significantly improving outcomes for youths and families, and have since been emulated throughout the world.
Judge Brown also put his energy into various charitable trusts, which include the Auckland Cricket Association, the Child Development Foundation of New Zealand and the Alcohol and Liquor Advisory Council.
Judge Brown was awarded the Blake Medal for leadership in 2013, and was described as having exceptional conviction and unrivaled compassion, leaving an indelible and lasting mark on New Zealand's justice system.
He was also Auckland University Chancellor between 1986 and 1991 and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Maori) at the University until late in 2005.
