A person has died after they were hit by a train near Maymorn Station in Upper Hutt.

Police confirmed the death just after 10am. They were called to the incident at 7.20am.

The train between Wellington and Wairarapa will not be operating for several hours, and rail commuters should expect delays into Wellington this morning.

An alert on the Metlink app said an emergency within the tunnel had stopped the 6.20am train from Masterton to Wellington at the south end of the tunnel.

Wellington Free Ambulance confirmed it was in attendance.
