UPDATED: 6.23PM A person has been crushed to death in a workplace accident at a rubbish tip on Auckland’s North Shore.
The accident happened at the Envirowaste refuse station off Constellation Drive in Mairangi Bay.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 3.26pm today.
The victim was a truck driver, working for a rubbish collection company, not Envirowaste.
He was moving a waste bin at a storage yard next to the transfer station when the accident happened.
It is understood he may have been crushed by a bin.
The police did not give an age and said they would not be releasing the male’s name today.
The death will be referred to the coroner.Â
In a statement released this evening, Envirowaste chief executive Gary Saunders said the company is devastated that there had been a fatality at its transfer station.
He confirmed the man who died was a truck driver and not an Envirowaste employee.
Mr Saunders said the site is used by many different operators and Envirowaste will be doing everything it can to work with all involved to find out what happened.
He said their thoughts and focus are with the family of the driver, the staff on-site, and the emergency services dealing with the incident.
WorkSafe New Zealand has arrived at the site is making inquiries.
The accident comes a year after 20-year-old recycling truck driver was injured and later died in hospital after an accident at Thorndon, in Wellington.
Junior Hunt was crushed in lifting gear, and found unconscious in an EnviroWaste truck.
He was pulled free and taken to Wellington Hospital, but died the next day.
