Parents in an upscale suburb of Auckland are choking on the price of their local school's PE gear.

The new shirt for students at Parnell District School costs $62.50.

Some parents say they bought the shirts thinking their children could wear them on any school day.

But now that rule has been changed, and the pricey gear can only be worn on specific days.

The school says it's asked the manufacturers to explain why the shirts are so expensive.
