New Zealand has lost its last Hippopotamus.

Auckland Zoo has today confirmed the death of 41-year-old Faith who was born at the zoo.

Faith had fallen ill over the last few days, and staff made the tough decision to euthanise her when her condition deteriorated yesterday.

She was exhibiting signs of fatal haemorrhagic respiratory disease. The zoo is unable to confirm cause of death until a full post-mortem has been carried out and results received.

Staff are currently grieving the loss of Faith who was the last hippo in the country after her son Fudge, 28, died in March.
