NZ will 'drag down' attempt to limit climate crisis

Environmental organisations are urging Prime Minister John Key not to attend the upcoming Paris climate summit and to pull the New Zealand delegation from the two weeks' of talks.

Governments will gather in Paris in December in an attempt to reach a global deal limiting warming to two degrees and setting countries up for zero-carbon economies by 2050.

But Cindy Baxter from the Coal Action Network says if New Zealand attends, we'll drag down attempts for a very strong climate deal.

"We've got one of the worst emission reduction targets on the planet so if an agreement is made it's bound to be, if New Zealand is involved, a lot less strong than what it could be."

"We need the strongest possible deal."

Baxter said the New Zealand delegation also wants countries' emission targets to be non-binding under any agreement, meaning governments could walk away from their targets at any time.

Meanwhile, the Green Party hopes National's vulnerability to public opinion could produce stronger action on climate change.

Party co-leader James Shaw claims there's been a noticeable change in public opinion recently, with a recent survey showing 87 percent of people were concerned about the issue.

"When they see some risk to their poll numbers, or they're on the wrong side of public and that it is starting to cause them some pain, that is when they change their minds," Shaw said.
