New Zealand is one of 193 countries which have just committed to improving the health of the world's oceans.
Thirteen hundred commitments have been made at the end of a five-day Ocean Conference, at the United Nations.
The commitments include increasing protected areas, curbing pollution and pushing on with the Paris Climate Change deal.
UN Information Officer Daniel Shepard said our government is truly pushing the boat out.
"I believe New Zealand made the most voluntary commitments of any government at this conference - I believe they signed on to more than 20."
Mr Shepard said the seas have been taken for granted for too long.
"People always thought they could do whatever they want, dump whatever they want, and now people have to take responsibility, manage conserve and protect ocean resources."
