If you were feeling the heat last year, you're not alone.
The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research says 2016 was the warmest year since records began in 1909.
It was also the warmest year on record globally.
NIWA Principal scientist Chris Brandolino, says the warmth's come from a range of factors, including climate change.
He says New Zealand's seeing increasing carbon dioxide levels which has caused a steady temperature increase.
Mr Brandolino says this increase combined with abnormally warm sea surface temperatures and winds from a warm direction to result in the record-breaking year.
