It's hoped a new pest control method in Northland will eradicate guava moths by exploiting their libido.
The moth's larvae are known to destroy soft fruit and nut crops in the region.
Northland Regional Council Biosecurity Manager Don McKenzie says for 14 months, 80 Whangarei residents will test moth pheromone scented ties in their gardens.
Mr Mckenzie says the ties will hopefully leave male moths looking for non-existent females, causing them to die of exhaustion.
