There can be no guarantees New Zealand will not see a similar disaster to London's Grenfell Tower fire.

Auckland Council has confirmed two apartment buildings have combustible aluminium panels, similar to those used in the Grenfell Tower.

The buildings are deemed safe, but are both in the process of being re-clad due to leaky building issues.

Regulatory services director Penny Pirrit said "while the buildings have met some of the strictest fire standards in the world," disasters can never ever be ruled out.

"We can never as a council give guarantees that people are safe from fire, because some of that is about their own behaviour or how the tenants of that building, use that building," said Pirrit.

Hundreds of buildings around the country may have the panels, which weren't effectively banned until this month.

Most New Zealand buildings with combustible cladding similar to those in London's Grenfell Tower are not likely to be re-clad.

Auckland Council has identified up to 90 buildings that may have the combustible panels.

Christchurch City Council expects to find a similar number, and Wellington City Council has no idea how many it will find.

Ms Pirrit said "most buildings with the panels are code-compliant and very safe."

"They have built meeting the fire safety regulations at that time. What we can never guarantee is how buildings are managed, and how people behave within a building."
