The body of a newborn baby has been found in a central Auckland park this morning by a council worker.
Police were called to Albert Park about 7am following the discovery of an infant’s body.
Auckland City District Police’s Detective Senior Sergeant Ash Matthews said a park worker was the first to come across the body.
“Sadly, when examined, there were no signs of life,” Matthews said.
Police are now conducting a scene examination and were speaking to an individual who is believed to be the baby’s mother.
“A post-mortem examination will also be carried out in the coming days,” Matthews added.
Auckland Council confirmed a park maintenance contractor found the baby’s body.
“We are aware of this incident and the matter is currently with police for investigation,” a council spokesperson said.
The infrastructure company supplying park workers for council, Ventia, has been approached for comment.
