The country's biosecurity arrangements are up for review.

Minister for Primary Industries, Nathan Guy, has announced a new project that will see the biosecurity system's founding document updated and replaced.

He says the time is right to take a longer view and he's been discussing with officials, since last year, the need to be better prepared for biosecurity threats.

Nathan Guy says the work will give a clear direction for the biosecurity system and identify any changes or improvements needed over the next 10 years.

He adds as the fruit fly discovery in Auckland shows our biosecurity system is facing ever-increasing pressures with growing international trade and greater mobility of people.
