A New Zealand pensioner living alone in a coastal apartment in Thailand has been found in a room days after he died.

Police discovered the body of 72-year-old Campbell Frank Taylor in the bathroom of his condominium in the Jomtien Beach area of Pattaya.

Thai English news website Asean Now reported officers from Pattaya City Police Station were called to the high-rise unit on Monday just after 3pm, after neighbours reported a strong odour coming from his room.

Taylor had not been seen by staff and neighbours in the days leading up to the find.

Asean Now said the building’s security personnel raised the alarm with police, who discovered the body.

Taylor was found lifeless on the bathroom floor of his 12th-storey apartment..

Police told the local news outlet they believed he had been dead for three or four days before being found.

New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it was aware of the death.

“We are providing consular assistance following the death of a New Zealand citizen in Thailand.

“No further information will be provided for privacy reasons.”

The 22-storey apartment is on Jomtien Second Rd, one block back from a popular tourist beach.

Asean Now reported that a security guard at the condominium told police Taylor lived alone and was a retired foreign resident.

According to the guard, the man was known for being friendly and regularly bought lottery tickets to give to security staff.

Investigators said there were no signs of struggle or evidence of property being disturbed inside the room.

Initial suggestions from Thailand police suggested Taylor may have died after he slipped and fell in the bathroom, striking his head.

Inquiries into the circumstances of his death are ongoing, and the New Zealander’s body has been sent for an autopsy.

Thailand officials had contacted the New Zealand Embassy to assist Taylor’s family.

In October last year, 47-yr-old Kiwi woman Karla Anne Drescher was found dead in her Kata Beach, Phuket hotel room while on holiday.

A 49-year-old German man, who was a friend of the woman, alerted hotel staff after he found she was not breathing.
