New speed limits of 110km an hour are not a target, says the Transport Agency as speed limit increases are rolled out.
Tauranga's Eastern Link and parts of the Waikato Expressway are both set to receive the new increased limit first.
NZTA Road Safety Director Harry Wilson said the quality of the chosen roads makes it safe to go faster.
However, he said the change shouldn't pressure hesitant drivers to accelerate out of their comfort zones.
"It's not an upper limit, it's not a target - people should drive where they feel safe," he said.
"We we want people to drive safely to the conditions."
