A Christchurch accommodation provider is cracking down on security checks after six homes - including one of her own - were robbed..
Two women are facing charges after they allegedly used a stolen foreign credit card to book accommodation.
Christchurch Holiday Homes Director Sue Harrison says the booking looked innocent enough..
But she says when guests book at short notice and arrive late at night it can be a red flag - so they checked.
"The next day saw curtains were pulled and thought okay they are possibly out or asleep, we won't disturb them, but the next day the curtains were still pulled so we went inside and saw there were some things missing, and obviously they had left in a rush."
Harrison says they've always been vigilant when it comes to ID checks - but are now double checking.
"Especially people who arrive late or who we can't easily and check on them, we make sure we have another ID and if we aren't comfortable, we need to check them before they come in."
She says those renting out their houses short term should check the terms of their insurance.
She says while AirBnB and Book-a-Bach have back up insurance for owners - this was booked through Bookings.com which doesn't.
"And also tourist companies look very closely at who you are letting into your house. So if you have actually have a booking, you have to make sure they are there for the purposes they say they are."
