Politicians are recognising the work of firefighters at events around the country today.

Fifty-two MPs are visiting fire stations in their electorates or hometowns in recognition of International Firefighters' Day.

Fire and Emergency says the day is about celebrating the tireless work of firefighters and acknowledging the support of their families and friends..

Fire crews were called to 77-thousand incidents last year -- more than 200 every day.

That included 12-thousand medical emergencies, six-thousand crashes and five-thousand building fires.

They were also called to more than two-thousand severe weather events.
