UPDATED 8.47AM An 11-year-old boy who was seriously hurt in a motorbike accident in the Bay of Plenty is now in a stable condition in hospital.

The boy was airlifted to Tauranga Hospital from Matakana Island at around 7.30 last night.

He collided with his brother on another motorbike resulting with his leg being broken and cut.

Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter pilot Todd Dunham said the youngster was very brave.

"He was not crying or anything he was just sitting there. Due to the seriousness of his injuries it was amazing how tough he was".

Dunham said it was fortunate it had just stopped drizzling before the rescue helicopter was called out to the island or it wouldn't have been able to go.

"And the way he's fallen he 's sustained a real serious leg injury that require him to go to Tauranga Hospital urgently".

Dunham said the rescue helicopter attends a lot of incidents on the island because the only access is by ferry, but this is the first motorbike accident he's aware of.
