The Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland is turning 50 and to celebrate they're bringing the museum alive.

Tomorrow visitors will get to experience live entertainment, rides for the kids and a number of hands-on activities.

MOTAT CEO Michael Frawley says the museum wants to be as interactive as possible.

"We don't want to be a museum that puts things behind glass, but nor do we want to a be a museum where everything's done on an iPad. We want people to get up close and personal with this stuff."

Mr Frawley says the museum is an iconic Auckland institution.

"You've either been there as part of your school trip or you've been taken there by your parents or you've taken your grandchildren there. So it's had a big impact on Auckland and indeed wider, through the whole of New Zealand."

He says not only does the museum want to celebrate it's past, but also the exciting plans it has for the future.
