The summit of five more ancestral mountains, or tupuna maunga, in Auckland will become car-free from 2017.

The Tupuna Maunga Authority says the top of Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill, Maungarei/Mt Wellington, Owairaka/Mt Albert, Puketapapa/Mt Roskill and Takarunga/Mt Victoria are to be pedestrian-only spaces.

Walkers will share the spaces with cyclists and there will be access for limited mobility vehicles.

Authority chair Paul Majurey says the measures will increase public safety and enhance pedestrian access, while respecting the cultural values of the mountains.

He says the decision follows the successful move to make the summit of Maungawhau/Mt Eden car-free last year.

"There has been overwhelming public support for the pedestrianisation of Maungawhau and it is pleasing to see families safely walking the roads there in great numbers," he said.

"This experience, together with the mounting calls from various communities to do the same at other tupuna maunga, gives us the confidence to take this next step."
