The Masterton community is in mourning after a much-loved school student died in an accident on Monday.
In a public Facebook post, Solway College student Emma Heathcote was described as “resilient in her own quiet way”, with “a buoyant sense of humour” that lifted everyone around her.
“Emma had the biggest heart we have ever known,” the post said.
“Loved deeply by her parents Tony and Jenny, her sisters Amelia and Maddy, her grandparents, and all her wider whanau and friends. Forever in our hearts.”
Solway College principal Janine Tupaea told the Herald Heathcote was a much-loved and treasured member of the school’s close-knit whānau.
“She had been part of Solway College since the start of Year 9 and was a valued boarding student in our hostel,” she said.
“Emma was a key member of our First XI hockey team, equestrian team, and First XI cricket team, as well as being involved in many other extracurricular activities.”
Tupaea said Heathcote’s contributions, character and leadership meant she was named as a 2026 school prefect.
“Emma will be much-loved by our entire Solway College community. Her family remains at the forefront of our thoughts and prayers.”
