UPDATE 12.04PM: A large scrub fire in the Far North has been largely contained.

The blaze at Titoki, west of Whangarei, has burnt through 130 hectares.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Paul Radden says it's now contained on two thirds of the perimeter.

He says five helicopters are working to dampen down hotspots and one helicopter is working on the other third of the perimeter.

The blaze broke out in a Titoki reserve on Thursday afternoon and firefighters, helicopters, a bulldozer and a digger were dispatched to the site.

Fire and Emergency says crews resumed fighting the blaze early on Friday morning, with six helicopters now tackling it from overhead and two water tankers brought in.

No homes or other buildings were at risk from the blaze, but it had already claimed an extensive section of reserve land.

Crews were forced to abandon efforts at 10pm on Thursday and resumed at first light.

The cause of the blaze was still unknown.

There is currently a total fire ban across the entire Northland region.
