A man is missing after falling from his boat and being swept away down the Waioeka River.

Police were called to the Waioeka River at around 5.30pm yesterday and found the man’s boat - but not him.

“A rescue helicopter and private helicopters were also engaged in the search, as well as local jet boat operators,” said Eastern Bay of Plenty Area Commander, Inspector Nicky Cooney.

The incident follows floods and wild weather in the Bay of Plenty region.

“Sadly, at this stage, the man remains outstanding.”

Today, police are continuing to search near the river’s junction with Waiata Stream, using both land and water-based resources, as well as a drone.

“We continue to support the man’s family at this difficult time.”
