Updated 2:19pm: Health officials say a man being assessed for Ebola at a Gold Coast Hospital is unlikely to have contracted the deadly virus.

The ill man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital this morning by paramedics wearing full protective gear.

He'd returned from the Congo earlier this week.

Acting chief executive Damian Green says paramedics first noted he had Ebola-like symptoms, but an initial assessment at the hospital looks promising.

He says that assessment suggests it's exceedingly unlikely that the patient has Ebola.

But Damian Green says he's being isolated in accordance with national guidelines.
