The truck driver trapped inside his cab after a crash in Christchurch has been freed by the fire service.

One truck carrying wet dirt, and another carrying empty containers, hit head-on at the intersection of Yaldhurst and Fovant street shortly after 9:30am.

The fire service had two appliances working to free the man who was heavily trapped inside the vehicle.

He has since been transported to Christchurch hospital by ambulance, while the other driver escaped uninjured.

Detours are still in place on Yaldhurst road, which has been closed between Russley and Cutts Road.
