Police also escorted a woman away from the scene.
In a statement police said two people were speaking with officers and there was no further risk to the public.
Charges were being considered.
A witness told RNZ he saw two people arguing on the street. Soon after one of the pair “got up, put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a gun and loaded it and pointed it at him and said he’s going to shoot him”.
A man living at a backpacker’s next door said he was not worried about seeing armed police.
“It’s part of Auckland. There’s a lot of this around here, a lot of police. I wouldn’t say armed offenders is normal, but the police is normal.”
