• More gales and rain for the West Coast are expected to hit today.

• Several major highways are closed on the top of the South Island as well as central North Island.

• Mega-strike rallies in Wellington, Wairarapa and Canterbury planned for tomorrow have been cancelled due to severe weather - others will still go ahead.

• Parts of the country are in for a brief reprieve today before more severe weather returns for a second round on Thursday.
