Police have named the 26-year-old man who died after being caught in a rip at Karioitahi Beach last week.
The young man who died in the incident from Te Atatū Peninsula was Ali Hayder Hadi.
Police said Hadi had been at the beach with his brother and two friends when they got into difficulty.
His brother was able to get back to safety on the beach.
“Sadly, Ali could not be revived despite assistance being provided by first responders,” police said.
Police said his death has been referred to the coroner.
Last week, Surf Life Saving New Zealand said two swimmers were caught in a rip near the Kariaotahi Surf Lifesaving Club at 7.16pm.
