Dicey weather has seen an injured tramper spend the night in Kahurangi National Park waiting to be rescued.
The Te Aroha man in his 50s suffered hip, rib and lower back injuries after falling up to 10 metres while negotiating tricky terrain.
Two other men helped the injured tramper on what was a very slow trek to Thor hut, where a satellite phone was used to notify rescue services at around 10pm yesterday.
Bad weather moving through the area meant the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was unable to reach the Park.
An airlift attempt was made at first light, and the man was flown to Nelson Hospital in a stable condition.
