They can get married, but same-sex couples still face a harder time finding a home.

Auckland Council's recording a severe shortage of social housing for gay, lesbian and transgender people.

Sara Fraser from the Queer Avengers says it's national problem.

"We've had several issues with homeless youth, and there's quite a number of trans people who struggle with finding somewhere to live as well," she says.

Sara Fraser says housing discrimination can often be subtle or even unconscious.

"If they're allowed to discriminate, it's only going to make the problem even bigger," she says.

Fraser says the government's plan to hand housing over to religious groups isn't the answer.
