A new suicide prevention centre is hoping to address gaps in the system.

The Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust are celebrating the opening of their new Hope Centre today.

The Dunedin operation will provide unique services and is believed to be the first of its kind in New Zealand.

Chair Corinda Taylor says there's no handbook for what to expect in the aftermath of losing a loved one, or even when a loved one is struggling with their mental health.

"There are many many complications that people face after the loss of a loved one to suicide, there may be many questions that people need to ask. So we know the system quite well and we walk alongside people."

Taylor says volunteer staff will support people battling to access mental health care and make sure they get the help they deserve.

"Often people aren't even notified that they're loved ones are even in the system and people are discharged alone and unsupported. We want to make sure this does not happen, there are way too many gaps."

She says the centre also offers prevention workshops and bereavement support.

The centre at 3 Albion Place will be open between 10 and 4 tomorrow for the public to stop by.
