UPDATED 2.02pm: The holiday road toll remains at three.
A 10 year old girl, a pedestrian, was the third death on the country's roads this long weekend after she was hit by a motorbike near Lake Rotoma in the Bay of Plenty last evening.
There have also been road deaths near Auckland and in south Waikato.
But road policing manager Superintendent Carey Griffiths is calling the girl's death an absolute tragedy.
"That young girl appears to have walked or run onto the road in front of a motor cyclist.
"That's still under investigation so it's a bit too soon to speculate as to cause."
Griffiths is warning people not to just focus on the number of deaths, as there are also a number of serious injuries suffered in accidents over the long weekend.
A woman is still in a critical condition in Palmerston North Hospital after a crash this morning.
The 20-year-old was taken to hospital after her car rolled near Feilding.
The road toll period finishes at six o'clock tomorrow morning.
