Health authorities are adamant Auckland's typhoid outbreak is localised, despite concerns it could be more widespread.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service says the outbreak is limited to the Samoan Assembly of God church, which meets at a Mt Roskill primary school.

One person has died from the disease, three people are in hospital, 14 others have been diagnosed, and three more may have it.

The Health Service is assuring both the school and the wider Pacific community that they're aren't at risk from the disease.

Jerome Mika, the spokesman for the family of the deceased, says the church service in question involved Pacific congregations from across Auckland.

"We are trying to organise a meeting so that we can get people tested, and get them together to give them some information," he said.

Health minister Jonathan Coleman criticised the Health Service for revealing the outbreak three days after the woman died, and a week after typhoid was first detected.

"It would be good to release information in a timely and appropriate manner, but there may be reasons why they didn't release it sooner."

Coleman said "the very word typhoid concerns people" and it was important that communication by health officials on any outbreak was "very clear".
