The Government's being told it should give more funding to transport options other than new roads.
The Greens say 13 urban cycleway projects around the country are a good step, but not enough to encourage people to switch from their car to a bike.
Transport spokeswoman Julie Anne Genter says it would make a difference if biking to school was a safe option.
"I think it's a Kiwi birthright. Most New Zealanders above a certain age grew up walking and cycling to school and it's something that we should be able to let our kids do now."
Julie Anne Genter says it's possible, all that's needed is to make it a priority.
