An expert in dealing with family violence believes extra investment could help reduce the stigma of family harm.
The government has announced an additional $76 million in funding over the next four years for family violence services for victims, perpetrators and their families.
Police have been running a pilot programme called Integrated Safety Response in Christchurch and the Waikato which deals with family violence.
ISR manager Leanne McSkimming says extra funding will have an impact on de-mystifying the issue.
"There's no suburb in Christchurch excluded from family harm. There is this perception it only happens in certain areas."
McSkimming says they are already seeing the results from the 220 on average reported episodes of family harm they get each week.
"Those whanau that engage with our wider ISR services, two thirds of those whanau have no further episodes of family harm."
