The company involved in a skydiving accident near Queenstown over the weekend has said a gear malfunction is to blame.
A 36-year-old cameraman, employed by NZONE, was seriously injured in the fall. Â It's been revealed the cameraman had thousands of jumps to his name prior to the accident. Â
NZONE business development manager, Derek Melnick said the accident occurred when something went wrong with the opening of his parachute, but he was able to bring the flight under control.
He said in the last 600 feet of the journey, during the landing preparations, his parachute became unstable, causing him to go into a spin and then hit the ground at speed.
Mr Melnick said the cameraman sustained multiple injuries from the accident and underwent surgery, but has since been stabilised.
He said as per procedure, a report has been filed with both the safety director of the New Zealand Parachute Industry Association and the Civil Aviation Authority.Â
