Whether we want cats or birds in our future is being posed as a realistic question some communities in New Zealand might have to consider.

Predator Free New Zealand says the threat of both feral and domestic cats might be enough for some to look at another pet.

General manager Jessi Morgan says it's a big change but something she sees society as increasingly becoming aware of, and sympathetic to.

"It is not to undermine how important they can be as companions, but we need to reduce the impact they have on our wildlife."

Morgan is asking people to consider whether they really need a cat, or if there's another pet that can fulfil the same need.

"Cats only bring back around 25 percent of their hunting trophies, but people might want to start thinking about whether they get another cat in the future.
