Wellington Fire and Emergency have sent multiple crews to attend a large fire in Upper Hutt, with more on the way.
Police were called to a fire on the corner of Blenheim Street and Goodshed Road at 1.35pm.
Blenheim St is currently closed, police said.
It is understood the fire started at Hillside Auto Wreckers.
An employee at nearby Brewtown, Phil Gorman, told the Herald he had been helping direct traffic flow as emergency services tackled the blaze.
Gorman said police closed the main arterial road about 2pm and people were struggling to get in and out.
He said he felt like emergency services had the fire under control and no neighbours seemed affected.
“The smoke off the fire has been black, black, black but now it is a light grey,” Gorman said.
“Please keep clear of the area and follow directions of crews and other services if you are nearby,” Fire and Emergency said on social media.
“If smoke is affecting your property, stay indoors and close doors and windows.”
Police confirmed no injuries had been reported.
More to come.
