A father of three has been named as the Northland kayaker found dead after a morning outing turned to tragedy.

Matthew George Taylor, 29, went kayaking in the sheltered Ruakākā estuary on Monday.

Sergeant Simon Craig said a search began after the Ruakākā local failed to return home.

“What should have been morning exercise in good conditions has turned into a tragedy.”

Members of the Ruakākā Surf Lifesaving Club found Taylor a few hours later in the estuary.

His body was discovered a short distance from where his upturned kayak had been located.

According to police, Taylor left behind a partner and three young children.

“They are all struggling to come to terms with their loss,” Craig said.

The family have asked for privacy as they grieve.

Craig said police acknowledged those involved in the search for Taylor.

A rāhui, put in place by Patuharakeke kaumātua over the Ruakākā River, lifts this afternoon.

Taylor’s death will be referred to the coroner.
