Hawke's Bay farmers are demanding more information about where exactly Mycoplasma Bovis has been found in the region.
The cattle disease has been detected in a farm in the Hastings district.
This is the first time it has spread to the North Island, after devastating farms in South Canterbury and Southland since July.
The Ministry for Primary Industries has called a public meeting next week to update Hawke's Bay farmers on the situation.
Federated Farmers Hawke's Bay president Will Foley is expecting that meeting to have a huge turn-out.
"There are going to be so many farmers out there just wanting to know the facts. How the disease got here, what are the precautions being taken now and what we can all do to make sure we contain this disease and hopefully eradicate it."
The disease was not expected to reach a farm from the South Island, he said.
"At Hawke's Bay we're pretty far away and we didn't expect this to end up on our doorstep. Especially not quite so soon."
