A performing arts and events centre in the heart of Auckland's CBD looks set to receive a $64 million facelift and extension.
The Aotea Centre, which opened its doors 25 years ago this week, originally cost $128 million to build.
It's one of four development sites the council is seeking public input on to breathe new energy into Aotea Square.
Auckland Live director Robbie Macrae said the roof needs to be replaced and the building reclad.
There are also plans to push out the back of the centre, creating additional studio and rehearsal space to house the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, New Zealand Opera, Black Grace Dance Company and the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
Regional Facilities Auckland has funding in the council's 10-year budget for the estimated $64 million project.
The three other proposed developments are refurbishment of the soon-to-be heritage-listed Civic Administration Building and carpark sites alongside Bledisloe House and behind the Auckland Town Hall.
